Perfect.
I’ve always put off having a blog and I don’t really do technology. All this twitter stuff bamboozles me and still does. However, I’ve been encouraged (told) by members of Young Independence that I have to drag myself out of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. I’ve done so kicking and screaming! So here goes:
The past week has given me hope that the British people are finally ready to break the political monopoly held by the ‘big three’ parties. If the result of the Norwich North by-election is to tell us anything, it’s that support for the minor parties is on the rise. Support for the LibLabCon fell from 44,300 in 2005 to 26,700 in 2009, yet support for the smaller parties, such as UKIP and the Greens showed a significant improvement.

As a UKIP activist, I was particularly pleased with our result. Glenn Tingle proved to be an excellent candidate who ‘ticked all the boxes’: he’s a local guy with a personal following, he’s lucid, he’s ex-forces and he does a lot of work for charity.
It was also the most professional by-election campaign UKIP has ever run with activists pouring in from around the country. In addition, it represented a shift in UKIP’s by-election strategy and the campaign was focussed around the personal attributes of the candidate. I don’t think anyone could deny that it worked for UKIP scored its best ever by-election result in Norwich North, polling 11.8%. So well done to Glenn and the team. You have done us all proud!
Not to be outdone, Pete Reeve won two, yes two, council seats in Ramsey on Thursday. Pete and I have been mates for years and I’m so proud of him. Pete is now a District and a County Councillor. So well done Cllr Cllr Reeve! I also need to give a big congratulations to Derek Armstrong for winning a seat on Broseley Town Council in the West Midlands.
So in one single day UKIP won a district council seat, a county council seat, a town council seat and scored its best ever by-election result. Overall, not a bad day at the office I’d say!
Off politics, I indulged in my other passion last night: music. I went to see the Lightening Seeds at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall (for all you youngsters, they were great in the 1990’s!!!). Not only did they play one of my favourite songs of all time (‘Sense’), they also played a famous track called ‘Lucky You’. This song always reminds of a certain unelected government minister who used to be European Commissioner (Any guesses?). The first line of the song goes:
You’re lying again
You say you don’t but then you do
Finally, I was a bit gutted as ‘the seeds’ didn’t play one of the greatest songs, ‘Perfect’, which is a bit ironic considering Thursday 23 July 2009 was almost perfect for UKIP.
