Trident Plans Slammed
Proposals to cut the UK’s fleet of Trident missile-carrying submarines was criticised today (Thur) by the UK Independence Party.
“This is more about economics than halting the spread of nuclear weapons as Gordon Brown is claiming,” said North West MEP Paul Nuttall.
“And this will be a bitter blow for the workers in Barrow where these submarines are to be built. Life is hard enough as it is in this area and I want to do all I can to help these hard working folk.
“Meanwhile we are living in extremely dangerous times with unstable countries rapidly moving towards developing nuclear weapons. We must be in a strong position to defend ourselves which in turn will reduce the likelihood of attack.
“It is all very well offering civil nuclear power to non nuclear states which say they are ready to renounce plans for nuclear weapons but how on earth can that be policed?” said Mr Nuttall, who is UKIP’s chairman.
